Speech-Language Pathology

Little boy learning at a desk.

Kinark Autism Services offers Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) assessment and treatment sessions for children and youth.

Our SLP services focus on the assessment and treatment of a broad range of speech, language, and communication impairments. These sessions support a child’s ability to communicate more effectively and participate in daily activities.

Our Speech-Language Pathologist will collaborate with each child and family to identify goals and develop an individualized, evidence-based treatment plan through:

  • Direct intervention with the child/youth to develop skills related to the identified goals
  • Providing adaptations to tasks with equipment/technology recommendations if appropriate
  • Consultation and caregiver coaching to help them support their child at home

Common assessment areas and goals may include, but are not limited to:

  • Language comprehension (understanding)
  • Language expression (use)
  • Pre-linguistic communication
  • Speech sound production
  • Social communication skills
  • Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC)
  • Stuttering
  • Play skills

How does an assessment help?

Assessments identify if a client is having difficulty in a specific area and how their difficulty is impacting their daily lives. Information gathered from assessments is then used to inform treatment. Assessment-informed treatment goals are developed with the objective of helping children successfully engage in communication, feeding or play skills.

Common treatment approaches of SLP include, but are not limited to:

  • Enabling the development of individual skills (through individual, group, and parent-mediated therapy).
  • Adapting tasks, and/or modifying the environment.
  • Recommendations, prescribing and training on augmentative and alternative communication devices.
