From Group Participant to Volunteer: Austin’s Inspiring Journey with Kinark

Learning Through Connection

When Austin first came to Kinark at five years old, his family was looking for a supportive space where he could grow, learn, and build confidence. Over time, Kinark became a meaningful part of his journey, helping him explore new skills and develop independence.

Through activities that encouraged teamwork, communication, and connection, Austin learned how to interact with peers in meaningful ways. “I remember playing games and doing fun stuff like cooking with other kids,” he recalls. “I learned how to get along and work with other kids, and I still do that.”

As he grew, Austin began applying these skills beyond Kinark, gaining confidence and embracing new challenges in everyday life.

Coming Full Circle

Now a teen, Austin has returned to Kinark as a volunteer, supporting children and youth who are starting similar journeys. “I wanted to volunteer because I like helping other kids, and it’s fun,” he says. “My favourite part is playing board games with everyone.”

For his mom, seeing Austin take on this role is a meaningful experience. “I feel proud seeing him now giving back. I hope he continues to do so whenever his schedule allows.”

Growth and Community

Austin’s story reflects the ongoing impact of connection, encouragement, and community. What began as a place to learn has grown into a space where he can give back, fostering confidence, collaboration, and kindness that continue to guide the experiences of children and youth at Kinark.
